Glossary

Kraków is Polish for Cracow, the ancient capital of Poland, residence for centuries of kings, situated north of the Tatra Mountains on the Vistula river.
Władysław II Jagiełło was the Grand duke of Lithuania. In 1386, Jagiełło married Jadwiga and ascended the throne as Władysław II Jagiełło.
Tadeusz Kościuszko (1746-1817) was a freedom fighter and warrant-officer in George Washington's army. He participated in the American War of Independence.
The statue of Tadeusz Kościuszko at the entrance to the Wawel Castle in Kraków is the work of Leonard Marconi and his son in law, Antoni Popiel. The statues was ready for casting in 1900, but was not erected until 1920. In 1940, it was destroyed by the Germans. The current replica, erected in 1960, is a gift to the City of Kraków by the Dresden community in Germany.
The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice in Polish) is a medieval market hall on the market square in Kraków.

Mikołaj Kopernik (better known by his Latin name Copernicus) was a Polish astronomer (1473-1543) who learned that the sun, not the earth, forms the center of our solar system.
