Glossary

The Battle of Grunwald was one of the most important European medieval battles. In 1410, the combined Polish-Lithuanian army, commanded by king Władysław Jagiełło, successfully opposed the Teutonic Knights under the command of Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. The defeat of the Teutonic Knights broke the back of the Order's expansionist ambitions and paved the way for a series of peace treaties. The battlefield lies about 20 km south of the village Olsztynek. Tannenberg is the Prussian name for Grunwald.
Jan Matejko is a well known Polish painter.
