In 1903, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky published his book "The exploration of cosmic space by means of reaction devices", arguably the first academic treatise on rocketry.
Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite, was launched on 4 October 1957.
Explorer I was launched from Cape Canaveral (now Kennedy Space Center) in Florida on 31 January 1958.
Luna 2 (Luna was originally called Lunik) was launched 12 September 1959.
Luna 3 was launched 4 October 1959.
Vostok 1 was launched 12 April 1961.
Friendship 7 was launched 20 February 1962.
Vostok 3 and 4 were launched 11 and 12 August 1962.
Mariner 2, a space probe to Venus, was launched 27 August 1962.
Mars 1, an automatic interplanetary station, was launched in the direction of Mars on 1 November 1962.
