Glossary

In October 1608, the Mary and Margaret left from London, England, and left for Virginia, United States. Poles and Dutchmen were sent to Virginia to establish sawmills and glassworks and to bring their industrial skills to Jamestown.
Jamestown is a town south of Buffalo, New York.
The Polish actor Helena Modrzejewska (1840-1909) was married to a man with the surname Modrzejewski, a name that Americans found difficult to pronounce. For stage purposes, she simplified her name to Modjeska.
Kazimierz Pułaski (1745-1779) is called Casimir Pulaski in the United States.
Tadeusz Kościuszko (1746-1817) was a Polish national hero who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
