Glossary

The painting shows the sacrifice of Iphigenia. In Greek mythology, Iphigenia is the daughter of Agamemmon and Clytaemnestra. She was sacrificed to Artemis when the head wind prevented the Greeks from sailing to Troje. Iphigenia was saved by Artemis and made priestess in Aulis, where she was found by her brother Orestes. Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724-1796), sometimes misspelled as Maulpertsch or Malpertsch, Austrian painter.
