Memorials for the labour strikes of 1970 (the December sacrifices) in Gdańsk and Gdynia.
In December 1970, demonstrations against price rises broke out in the northern Baltic coastal cities. Gdańsk and Gdynia were the scene of anti-government demonstrations which led to the downfall of Poland's communist leader Władysław Gomułka. A bloody clash with shipyard workers in which several dozen workers were shot to death forced his resignation.
