Glossary

Jerzy Kukuczka (1948-1989), mountaineer, created new roads in the Tatra mountains and in the Alps. Since 1977, he was active in the Himalayas and in Karakoram (the Jammu and Kashmir area in north India). Between 1979 and 1987, he was the second person in the world, after R. Messner, who went to all 14 summits of over 8000 meters. On 11 summits, he made new roads and he was the first to climb 4 summits in winter time. He perished when testing a passage through the north walls of the Lhotse mountains. He was awarded a silver medal of the olympic order by the international Olympic Committee for his excellent sportive achievements outside the Olympic games program.
