Glossary

Ostra Brama (meaning Pointed Gate, but generally called the Dawn Gate) is a town gate in Wilno. Wilno is now Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, but once part of Poland. Ostra Brama is known as a holy gate because it contains a shrine of the Holy Virgin.
Lwów was a Polish city until Word War I. The city was called Lemberg by the Germans. Today it is a Ukrainian city called Lviv.
Jan III Sobieski became king of Poland in the 17th century after his victory over the Turks in the liberation of Vienna.
The Zygmunt column is a statue of Zygmunt III Waza, king of Poland and Sweden, on the Royal Castle square in Warsaw.
The Royal Castle was the residence of the king in Warsaw. Warsaw is the capital of Poland.
A town hall is a government building that houses administrative offices of a town government.
Poznań is a city in west central Poland.
Wawel is the royal castle, home of three dynasties of Polish kings, in Kraków (Cracow).
Kraków is a city in south Poland.
The Dar Pomorza is a Polish sailing frigate. "Dar Pomorza" means "Gift of Pomerania" (Pomerania is a Polish county). In Poland, the Dar Pomorza was used as a training ship for the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia (near Gdańsk).
