Rebels on the barricades

In the Warsaw Uprising, citizens of Warsaw revolted against the German occupation when the Russian Red army approached the city in August 1944. The Russians however, did not support the rebels and the uprising failed, after which the city was destroyed by the German army. Many Poles were killed or exiled.
In the background of the image, you can see Syrena, the coat of arms of Warsaw.
